Lector — Privacy Policy
Last updated: 27 August 2026
Lector is a reading app for iPhone. It does not collect your data, because it has nowhere to send it.
The short version
Nothing you do in Lector leaves your iPhone. The app contains no networking code at all — no analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising identifier, no third-party SDKs, and no server belonging to the developer. There is no account to create and nothing to opt out of.
What Lector stores, and where
Everything below is stored only in Lector's own container on your device, and is deleted when you delete the app:
- Books you add — the full text of any
.txtor.epubfile you import, or text you paste, along with the title, author and cover if the file has them. - Your reading position in each book, and the speed and mode you last used.
- Your reading history — the date, duration, word count and measured speed of each session. This is what streaks, the daily goal and achievements are calculated from.
- Your settings — default speed, typeface, text size, daily goal, reminder time.
A small summary of today's reading (minutes read, streak, current book title) is written to a shared app group container so the home screen widget can display it. That container is part of the app's own sandbox and is not readable by other apps.
There is no account
Lector has no sign-in, no account and no user record. Nothing identifies you to the developer, because nothing reaches the developer. You are not asked for an email address and there is no password to forget.
The camera
If you use Scan Text to read a printed page, the camera feed is processed on your device by Apple's on-device text recognition. Lector keeps the recognised text and nothing else: no photograph is saved, to your library or anywhere, and no image is uploaded. iOS will ask your permission the first time, and the feature simply stays unavailable if you decline.
Files you import
When you import an EPUB, PDF or text file, Lector reads it and stores the extracted text in its own container. It does not keep a copy of the original file, and it does not read anything you have not chosen in the picker or sent to it deliberately.
Deleting your data
Deleting the app removes everything: the library, reading history, streaks, settings and the widget's data all live inside Lector's container and go with it. There is no account to close and no server-side copy to request the deletion of, because there is no server.
Exporting your data
Settings → Backup → Export a Backup writes a single JSON file containing your books, reading history and streaks. Where that file goes is entirely your choice — Files, iCloud Drive, AirDrop, another app. Lector does not upload it, and once you have saved it, the file is outside Lector's control and covered by whatever you saved it to. Restore from a Backup reads one back in.
Notifications
If you turn on the daily reminder, Lector schedules local notifications on your device. They are generated on the phone from your own reading history. No push server is involved and nothing is sent anywhere to produce them.
Children
Lector collects no data from anyone, of any age.
Changes
If a future version adds sync or any other feature that transmits your data, this policy and the App Store privacy disclosure will be updated before that version ships, and the change will be described here rather than made quietly.
